Canada Day thoughts

World events over these past few months have created a visceral reaction in many of us.

I wonder how it's possible in our day and age that it feels like we are moving backward.

The permissive gun laws that have remained status quo and the reversal of Roe vs Wade in the United States remind me of how fortunate I am to live in the country that I do.

If we look at our Country as a house, I see "our rights and freedoms" as the roof and we the people are the walls-the support that holds that roof up. We only need to look to the US to see when the walls crumble then the roof falls.

The roof has collapsed in the US because for the first time in history the court overturned a direct precedent to remove a right people had. Historically precedents have been overruled to expand rights but never to take them back.

This is a reminder as Canadians we need to make sure we are paying attention to our walls.

While thoughts and prayers are important, action and change is essential.

I am not looking to pontificate on a particular view but to raise awareness that we cannot rest on our laurels. Today as we celebrate the beautiful Country we live in, we need to think about what we can do to keep our roof strong.

The US has just come out of the Trump dumpster fire and these recent events have many of us shaking our heads in disbelief.
